Welcome to Second Element - l8

Independent legionella risk assessment consultants, also offer legionella training and audit of existing control measures. We can organise independent analysis of water by UKAS accredited laboratories.

It is the only disease that has a collaborator list in the European Common Market. All Common Market countries and nine out side the market are always vigilant. The Legionella bacteria is very hard to study under laboratory conditions, because it acts entirely different under working conditions in cooling towers etc. Legionella bacteria mainly affects people that are susceptible to the disease. It is described as a severe form of Pneumonia. There have been outbreaks of the disease in most countries around the world. We can all help to keep this dreaded disease at bay if everyone concerned with maintenance of all forms of equipment that uses water, is vigalant at all times and learns to understand the products that are used in controlling this disease. The problem is solved! DUCTED AIR COOLERS In those homes in which cool air is ducted from a rooftop evaporative unit, there is need for regular and careful maintenance. The danger from properly designed, well maintained units is negligible. The emphasis is on good housekeeping. Air-conditioning firms will provide a cleaning and maintenance service, or you can do it yourself. The following steps should be followed. AT THE END OF SUMMER Drain all water from the unit's tank and pipes. Clean the tank and pump filter with a cloth soaked with a chlorine-based household bleach and flush with clean water. Remove filter pads, hose clean and allow to dry. Dry the internal components, leave the drain cock open and fit covers to exposed units for off-season storage. BEFORE SUMMER STARTS Remove the external covers. Remove the filter pads and thoroughly clean the filters by hosing with water. If necessary, renew filter pads in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. Close the drain cock and fill with clean water. Check operation of the unit. DURING SUMMER In dusty areas, inspect and clean the unit regularly to maintain effective and safe operation. MOBILE UNITS Mobile evaporative cooling units should be completely drained and cleaned frequently during summer, and particularly if the water has been allowed to run warm. They should be left to dry when not used for an extended period. The bacteria causing Legionnaires` disease are very common, but build up to risky concentrations where water remains warm and stagnant. There is no risk from refrigerated air coolers. While no cases have yet been attributed to domestic evaporative air coolers, they too have the potential to accumulate risky concentrations of the bacteria. All evaporative air conditioners, domestic and commercial, require regular cleaning and maintenance. The best safeguard is to empty and clean all units at the end of each summer, cover and store dry, and flush clean with water again before the start of the following summer. If you follow the maintenance and operational guidelines on this page, your evaporative air cooling equipment will operate safely and efficiently for many years.
